Is there any link between bedwetting and ADHD?ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is connected with enuresis. Enuresis and ADHD are common to the childhood and is being researched for its relation. ADHD patients are susceptible to many other behavioral disorders in which enuresis also included. The children having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder having been found to be more prone to enuresis or bedwetting. Bedwetting is more problem creating to a child, because the ADHD patient as it is very different and sometimes unaccepted in the society for many behavioral disorders. The enuresis further accumulates to this and the child is thrown out to extreme shame and low self-esteem. A practical and trained approach must be taken when both enuresis and ADHD are present in the children. For treating bedwetting with ADHD, impulse control training and motivational counseling must be done in a professional manner. Most of the ADHD patients experience bedwetting during their early school age and normally outgrow it before attaining the age of 18. Systematic researches are being conducted to find out the connection between ADHD and bedwetting. On a study conducted a medical journal printed in 1997 pointed out that children with ADHD has a double or three times more occurrences of enuresis either nocturnal or diurnal in comparison with the children does not have ADHD disorders. The incidents of day time bedwetting were around five times more in case of the ADHD patients. Children with enuresis and ADHD is normally very difficult to present before a behavioral treatment or responsibility training. The ADHD patient different from other normal children is being out casted from others due to inattentive and impulsive behavior. In this juncture, the child may change his emotional feelings of shame to boldness and the enuresis further heap up the child’s feeling, thereby making difficulty in motivational and other behavioral treatment. Bedwetting is even sometimes unable to be treated by scheduled awakening because; the child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder will have sleeping disorders, either a very deep sleeper or difficulty in waking them up for voiding their bladder when it is full. Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder may be administered with many drugs for behavioral disorders and other psychiatric disorders. Some of these drugs leads to more production of urine and thus increase the enuresis. Before treating these children for bedwetting, all the physical and medical conditions must be ascertained. Antidepressant drugs are helpful in some cases which stops the ADHD and other behavioral disorders. Imipramine is an example for such antidepressant. Imipramine is a trycyclic antidepressant used to control the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and enuresis. While treating these kids, care must be taken so as no punitive behavioral treatment is included in the therapy. As this type of behavioral therapy may add up to the already disturbed mind of the child and may respond very harshly this will consequently fail the therapy. |
